$6 520-00 $a Jacobus Zevecotius or Jacob van Zevecote (1596-1642) was a professor of Rhetorics at Ghent, before he moved to Leiden in 1623. As a poetry teacher at the local university, he became friends with the influential professor Daniel Heinsius, who ✹ as a publishing advisor ✹ must have introduced Van Zevecote to the Elzevier family. This so-called emblem book ✹ a collection of images with corresponding poems that aimed to spread morality ✹ is a strange, but beautiful publication in the Elzeviers' catalogue. In contrast to the scholarly Latin-language books the Elzeviers are known for, the Dutch indicates it was intended for a general audience. The book is also unique in the sense that no other copies are known to exist outside the Elsevier Heritage Collection.-- $c Provided by Publisher.
