Digital Library
Project & Other Digitization Activities
-
Digital Library is a repository of
resources in the digital form. These resources can be used by the existing
access facilities with in the campus and over the Internet for wider access. The technology has made way for accessing the information wherever
it is using the Internet as a medium. Most
of the publishers are presently providing
options for the libraries to acquire and own in the printed form and also in
digital form leaving the option to the libraries based on the user comfort and
ability. Most libraries are looking for accessing the materials than
acquiring them because of the raising costs of the print materials
and shrinking budgetary provisions to the libraries.
-
Further, initiating efforts to obtain copyrights from the
copyright holders of printed materials for digital rights to digitise for wider
access. Most of the popular and scholarly publishers are publishing
e-journals databases and e-books and also serial publications as e-book series and
providing access through Internet. Consortium models of libraries
are forming at national level to reduce the access costs per member
library is the present trend and publishers are coming forward to
provide access.
-
Library has started creating a
model digital library with special funding from the UGC and in collaboration
with M/s. SUN Microsystems, a widely known hardware firm and M/s. V T L S Inc., the
third largest digital library Software Firm in the USA. University has signed MOUs
with these firms with their investments and support. They would like this to be
their reference site for the Asian Countries. Incidentally, SUN and VTLS have originated from the University campuses of
Stanford University and the Virginia Tech University in the USA. All the systems
and software were installed and operated on the book scanners
to digitise the selected (out of copyright) print materials and University
Thesis in the first phase.
-
The
bibliographic records of University Thesis, Dissertations, Project reports
and Digitized Books were separately identified and made visible as a group
through Online Catalogue and Library website. The University Thesis and selected
books (out of copyright) are linked to the Full text PDF documents.
The work is progressing.
-
Digital PDF documents of University Entrance question papers are made available
through Library website since the year 2010 to current.
