Alibates Flint Quarries

Alibates Flints QuarriesAlibates Flint, distinctive for its varied coloration, occurs in dolomite outcrops atop Permain Aged Redbeds in the Canadian River breaks near Amarillo and Fritch, Texas. Early inhabitants left shallow pits as evidence and quarry activity.

VISITATION:
Approximately 3,000 visitors per year. Small group tours are usual, but many large group tours are given during off season.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Site available by ranger led tours only.
Summer months: Memorial Day to Labor Day. Ranger guided tours, 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., seven days a week. Off-season tours by reservation only.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
Cool and rainy to hot and dry. Appropriate seasonal clothing, sturdy shoes for hiking and water.

DIRECTIONS:
Highway 136, north of Amarillo, south of Fritch, Texas. Turn west at Lake Meredith Recreational Area - Alibates Flint Quarries sign, go five and one-half miles to the ranger station.

TRANSPORTATION:
By personal vehicles only.

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
No fees charged.

Visitor Center/Exhibits:
Headquarters is located in Fritch, Texas and has a small book store.

Trails, Roads:
One mile walk up a small hill on a graveled trail.

Programs/Activities:
Site available by ranger guided tours only at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Includes information about early people that quarried the flint.

Lodging and camping facilities:
Primitive camping at nearby Lake Meredith.

Food/supplies:
Food and supplies are within 14 miles or less.

Other Concessions/NPS-Managed Visitor Facilities and Opportunities:
Small bookstore at ranger station.

Accessibility:
Gravel trail includes natural stone steps making the trail inaccessible to wheelchairs.

Special Needs:
Canteen of water, and for your comfort, sun protection.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Camping, swimming, fishing, and boating at nearby Lake Meredith.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations needed for tours before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.

BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
Allow at least two hours for guided tour.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
Occasional flint knapping demonstrations.

Lake Meredith Recreational Area.; Adobe Walls Battlesite (private landowner); Wonderland Amusement Park, Discovery Center in Amarillo.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Flint and artifact collecting not permitted.
