Canaveral
National Seashore

Part of a barrier island offering 24 milies of undeveloped beach and wetland enviroment encompassing over 57,600 acres. The park offers sanctuary for over 1000 species of plants, 300 species of birds, including 14 threatened or endangered species. Established January 5, 1975 to protect the largest stretch of coastline on the east coast of Florida.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:

Daily, summer 6 a.m to 8 p.m ; daily winter: 6 a.m to 6 p.m. South District may be closed because of Kennedy Space Center Operations.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:

Hot and humid with thunderstorms throughout summer. Mild winters. Lightweight clothing in summer; suntan lotion highly recommended. Sweater/jackets in winter.

North District accessible via State Route A1A in New Smyrna Beach. Exit # 84 A off of I-95

South District accessible via State Route 406 in Titusville. Exit #80 off of I-95

Visitor Center/Exhibits:

Information Center, exhibits in North District, New Smyrna Beach

Visitor Center, exhibits at Merrit Island National Wildlife Refuge near park in South District.

TRAILS ROADS:

Roadway does not connect North and South District. Each accessible via I-95 ( see Directions).

PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES:

Year-round ranger-led programs given in the North District including walks, talks, canoe programs, seasonal "Sea Turtle Watch"programs. No programs given from South District at this time.

LODGING AND CAMPING FACILITIES:

No lodging in park. A variety of hotels, motels, and a few RV camping sites are available in area.

Primitive/Backcountry camping with permit available in the North District.

FOOD/SUPPLIES:

Local Restaurants, grocery stores.

OTHER CONCESSIONS, NPS- MANAGED VISITOR FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:

A small bookstore located at North District Information Center is managed by the Eastern National Parks and Monument Association.

Merrit Island National Wildlife Refuge is close to the park and offers a Visitor Center, hiking trails, and a wildlife drive.

ACCESSIBILITY:

The Information Center is wheelchair accessible. Selected beachside parking lots have handicap ramps.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/USE:

Ranger-led programs, observing tropical plants along hiking trails, wildlife viewing, beachcombing, surfing, fishing, boating and canoeing. (rentals available outside park in North District)

Visiting Turtle Mound historical site in North District.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:

Reservations for canoe and "Turtle Watch" programs are required. Attendance on other ranger-guided programs do not required a permit. Special Use permits are required by writing Superintendent at headquarters (see address above). Primitive camping permits required. For further information concerning reservations, special use call (407) 267-1110.

VISITORS IMPACT:

Park closes when parking lots full which occurs during most summer weekends.
