Ulysses S. Grant
National Historic Site

Established as a unit of the National Park Service in 1990, the park commemorates the life, military career, and Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, as well as his wife Julia Dent Grant. The site, also known as White Haven, consists of 9.65 acres holding five historic structures (main house, stone building, barn, chicken house, and ice house).

15,000 anually; highest in summer months, lowest in the winter.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
St. Louis weather is very seasonal. Summers can be exceedingly hot and humid, while winters are often very cold. Thunderstorms can be frequent in warm-weather months. Wear seasonal clothing, with comfortable walking shoes.

DIRECTIONS:
From I-270, exit to Gravois Road (Hwy 30) East and follow to left on Grant Road; site entrance is approximately one mile on right.

From I-44 East, exit Berry Road, turn right off exit, turn left on Big Bend Road, turn right on Grant Road, turn right on Pardee Road and follow (turns into Grant Road again); site entrance is on left.

From I-44 West, exit Berry Road, turn left off exit, turn left on Big Bend Road, turn right on Grant Road, turn right on Pardee Road and follow (turns into Grant Road again); site entrance is on left.

From I-55, take I-44 West or I-270 West/North and follow above directions.

From I-70, take I-270 South and follow above directions.

TRANSPORTATION:
To Park: access by Interstate Highways (I-44, I-55, I-70, I-270), and various state roads; St. Louis is serviced by an international airport, bus, and Amtrak stations.

In Park: personal vehicle, bicycle, bus.

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
No admission fees. Donations accepted in Visitor center.

FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
A temporary visitor center with exhibits is located in the historic barn. Future restoration project includes a modern visitor center facilities in fully-restored barn.

Trails, Roads:
Grant Road accesses the site; a paved park road traverses the grounds. A hike and bike trail passes adjacent to the site along an old railroad cut.

Programs/Activities:
Interpretive tours by rangers and self-guided walking tours are available year-round. Tours of the main house may be available, depending on the current phase of the restoration project. Special programs are offered on the first Saturday of every month.

Lodging and camping facilities:
None in park. A variety of lodging facilities are available throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.

Food/supplies:
None in park. There are a vast number of restaurants and grocery stores in the area.

Other Concessions/NPS-Managed Visitor Facilities and Opportunities:
A bookstore located within the visitor center is managed by the Jefferson National Expansion Historical Association.

Accessibility:
The visitor center and restrooms are fully accessible. A paved road traverses the grounds. The main house is not accessible at this time, due to restoration work.

Special Needs:
Visitor parking is available at the site. Buses cannot enter the site (due to a high railroad berm) but may unload at the park entrance. Please call ahead for specific instructions and assistance with bus groups.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Begin at the visitor center for orientation to the site and reading the exhibits. Take a ranger-led or self-guided tour of the site.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations for school groups or other educational groups should be made at least two weeks prior to the visit. At least one month's notice and application for Special Use Permits is required. Filming permits are arranged on an individual basis (based on size of the project, whether a movie, commercial, etc., and how many park personnel for how much time will be involved). BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
A stay of at least one hour is recommended.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
Special interpretive programs are offered on the first Saturday of every month. Programs vary in content, and may include slide shows, guest speakers, book signings, living history, and children's activities.

ADJACENT VISITOR ATTRACTIONS:
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, located in St. Louis along the Mississippi River, is home to the famous Gateway Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion.

Grant's Farm, run by Anheuser-Busch, is adjacent to the site and provides a free tram-ride view of exotic animals.
