Maggie L. Walker
National Historic Site

The Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site commemorates the life of a progressive and talented African American woman. Despite many adversities, she achieved success in the world of business and finance as the first woman in the United States to found and serve as president of a bank. The site includes her residence of thirty years. The house is restored to its 1930's appearance with original Walker family pieces. Average: 0.36, federal; 0.93, non-federal.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., all year; closed: New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

DIRECTIONS:
Visitors traveling west on I-64 or north on I-95 take exit 76A, Chamberlayne Avenue, turn left at the light, go to the first light and turn left onto West Leigh Street. Go 2 1/2 blocks to the Site on the left.

Visitors traveling east on I-64 or south on I-95, take exit 76B at Belvidere and turn left at the stop sign. Go approximately 7 1/2 blocks to the Site on the left at 110 1/2 East Leigh Street.

Limited parking and bus parking is available on Second Street. Metered spaces are available on adjacent streets. Parking deck for Richmond Coliseum is within four blocks.

TRANSPORTATION:
City buses, taxies, personal vehicle.

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
No admission fees. Donations accepted.

Visitor Center/Exhibits:
Visitor center contains exhibits on the life of Maggie Lena Walker and the Jackson Ward community. There is also an eight-minute audio-visual program on Mrs. Walker's life. Tours of Mrs.. Walker's house leave from the visitor center on the hour and half-hour.

Programs/Activities:
Ranger guided tours are given on a first-come first-served basis, groups of ten or more must make reservations. For information on special events call (804) 771-2017.

Eastern National Parks and Monument Association operates a small sales outlet.

Accessibility:
The first floor of the house museum is accessible to wheelchair users.

Set aside half hour to an hour for guided tour.

Special weekend activities during February. July 15th Birthday Celebration. Open house during the Second Street Festival the first weekend in October.
