Knife River Indian Villages
National Historic Site

Home of Sakakawea, the park contains remnants of historic and prehistoric American Indian villages, last occupied in 1845 by the Hidatsa and Mandan. The site contains an array of artifacts of the Plains Indian culture, Visitor Center, museum and a full- scale furnished earthlodge. Acreage: 1,759, federal; 164.7, non-federal. Authorized October 26, 1974.

VISITATION:
Highest visitation is in June, July and August; lowest visitation is during December, January and February.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily, summer: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; daily, winter: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mountain Time; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
Summer: highs in the upper 80's, dry; winter: lows below zero, dry; dress accordingly. Check the current weather.

DIRECTIONS:
One-half mile north of Stanton, ND; one hour northwest of Bismarck, ND

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
No admission fees. Donations accepted at the Visitor Center.

FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center, Exhibits:
Fifteen minute orientation program; museum; bookstore; information desk; full-scale furnished Hidatsa earthlodge.

Trails, Roads:
Eleven miles of trails through natural areas and cultural sites.

Programs/Activities:
Regularly scheduled tours during June, July and August. As reserved the rest of the year.

Lodging and camping facilities:
None in park. A variety of motels and campgrounds are available in the area.

Food/Supplies:
Local restaurants, grocery stores and "Gas 'n Snacks".

Other Concessions/NPS-Managed Visitor Facilities and
Opportunities:
A bookstore, with Native American crafts, is located in the Visitor Center lobby, managed by the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association.

Accessibility:
The Visitor Center, restrooms, Hidatsa earthlodge and trail to two village sites are wheelchair accessible.

Special Needs:
Parking for vehicles and buses available at each site.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Touring historic site; hiking; wildlife viewing; fishing; picnicking and cross-country skiing.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations for educational and tour groups. Special Use Permits required for other park uses.

BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
Two-six hours depending on level of interest and activities.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
Host of the Northern Plains Indian Culture Fest, the fourth weekend in July; Native American crafts, music, dances, demonstrations and programs.

VISITOR IMPACTS:
Some parking areas and activity sites may be closed during the winter months, depending on the weather.

ADJACENT VISITOR ATTRACTIONS:
Lake Sakakawea and Missouri River fishing and boating; Cross Ranch, Fort Clark and Lake Sakakawea State Parks.
