The Robert E. Lee Memorial

Today, the house that Robert E. Lee lived in for 30 years and that is uniquely associated with the families of Washington, Custis and Lee is a memorial to Lee, who gained the respect of Northerners and Southerners
through his service in the Civil War. Authorized March 4, 1925 as Custis-Lee Mansion; transferred from War Dept. Aug. 10, 1933; made a permanent memorial June 29, 1955; name changed June 30, 1972.

- DIRECTIONS
- The Memorial is accessible by shuttle bus or by a 10-minute walk from the Arlington National Cemetery Visitor Center/parking area. Access from Washington is via the Memorial Bridge. Access from Virginia is from the
George Washington Memorial Parkway. The Memorial is also accessible by the Blue Line of the Metro subway system. The closest airport is Washington National.
- VISITOR ACTIVITIES
- Visitors tour the house with a self-guiding brochure. National Park Activities Service staff in period costume are stationed in the main areas to talk informally with visitors. Guided tours are available by appointment for groups
from October through March. The Memorial is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from April through September and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from October through March. The Memorial is closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Robert E. Lee's birthday is recognized in January and the Lees' wedding anniversary is observed June 30 with special events.

- ACCESSIBILITY
- The first floor of the house and the museum are accessible. The house has a self-operated lift while the museum is accessible at ground level.
