Guilford Courthouse
National Military Park
The battle fought here on March 15, 1781, was the largest, most hotly-contested action of the Revolutionary War's climatic Southern Campaign. The serious loss of British manpower suffered at Guilford Courthouse foreshadowed final American victory at Yorktown, seven months later.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed New Years Day (January 1), Thanksgiving
Day (4th Thursday of November), and Christmas Day (December 25).
CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
Summers: warm to hot and humid; occasional thunderstorm; spring and fall:
cool with rainy periods; winter: mild and cold; snow and ice possible in January
and February. Wear comfortable clothing for the season; good walking shoes.
DIRECTIONS:
I-85 South: exit NC 6 (Lee Street) to Morrow Boulevard, north to Fisher
Street; turn right on Battleground Avenue; park is approximately five miles
north; turn right on New Garden Road.
I-85 North: exit 121 (Holden Road) turn left on Holden Road; go approximately six miles; turn left on Benjamin Parkway; go one block and turn left on Battleground Avenue; go two miles and turn right on New Garden Road.
I-40 East: exit 213 (Guilford College-Jamestown Road); turn left on College Road; go north two miles; turn right on New Garden Road; go four miles to park.
Note: Directional signs are placed on major routes into Greensboro to assist in finding the park. I-85 north and I-40 east join in Greensboro.
TRANSPORTATION:
Greensboro is serviced by an international airport, bus, and Amtrak stations.
Greensboro is at junction of I-40 and I-85, along with US 220, 421 and 29.
In Park: personal vehicle, bicycle. Tour buses also have access.
FEES, COSTS, RATES:
No admission fees. Donations for general park purposes are accepted at box located
in visitor center.
FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
The park visitor center and park headquarters are located at the entrance
on New Garden Road. Information, a twenty-minute film, "Guilford Letters",
and museum exhibits are located here. Twenty-eight monuments honor Revolutionary
heroes and heroines.
Trails, Roads:
A two and one-quarter mile automobile/bicycle tour road begins at the visitor
center. Seven informational stops along the route provide on-the-site information.
A restored historic road and over two miles of paved foot trails provide access
to important points on the battlefield.
Programs/Activities:
A self-guiding tour follows the auto/bicycle tour road. Special ranger-conducted
group programs are available by contacting park. Special events include the
anniversary of the battle on March 15.
Lodging and camping facilities:
None in park. A variety of hotels, motels and RV camping sites are available
in the Greensboro area.
Food/supplies:
Local restaurants; grocery stores.

Opportunities:
A bookstore is located in the visitor center. An agency of Eastern National.
The store sells Revolutionary War books and related items.
Accessibility:
The visitor center, park trails and rest rooms are wheelchair accessible.
A wheelchair is available for loan. The visitor center film is captioned.
Special Needs:
Seven tour stops with wayside exhibits and four audio exhibits are along
the tour road. Parking for cars and buses available at each stop.
RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Walking foot trails and historic New Garden Road park and biking automobile
tour road. Although in a suburban setting the park offers a variety of wild
flowers and small wildlife.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations for school groups or other educational groups should be made
at least two weeks prior to visit. Weddings and use of conference room require
Special Use Permit and fee; filming permits and special event permits are
arranged on an individual basis (based on size of project or event, whether
a movie, commercial, etc.). For additional information concerning reservations

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
The annual anniversary of the battle is observed on March 15. Special living
history programs are scheduled on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and in the
fall. Call (336) 288-1776, extension 28, for specific dates and times and
other special programs.
This park is featured in a lesson plan created by
Teaching with Historic Places, a program of the National Park Service that
helps teachers and students understand how parks and other historic places
embody America's historical experiences and cultural expressions.
VISITOR IMPACTS:
The park is cut by Old Battleground Road; automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian
traffic must cross with caution. Winter ice or snow conditions may force temporary
closing of park and visitor center.
ADJACENT VISITOR ATTRACTIONS:
Tannenbaum Historic Park, a Greensboro City Park, preserves the Hoskins
House, an extant structure of the period of the battle. The park is open 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday;
closed Monday. Call (336) 545-5315 for information. Greensboro also has a
large and varied municipal park system offering recreational and cultural
attractions.
