Colonial troops commanded by 22 year old Colonel George Washington were defeated in this small stockade at the "Great Meadow". This opening battle of the French and Indian War on began a seven year struggle between Great Britain and France for control of North America. Great Britain's success in this war helped pave the way for the American Revolution.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield is located in southwestern Pennsylvania about 11 miles east of Uniontown. The park comprises approximately 900 acres in three separate sites. The main unit contains the visitor center, the reconstructed Fort Necessity and the Mount Washington Tavern. The Braddock Grave unit is approximately 1.5 miles west of the main unit and the Jumonville Glen unit is approximately seven miles northwest of the main unit.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., all year; closed Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
In summer it is generally warm, often humid with cool mornings and evenings. In winter it is generally cold with snow possible from November through April. Layered clothing is recommended.

US Route 40, 11 miles east of Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

TRANSPORTATION:
To Park: personal vehicle only, no public transportation available.
In Park: personal vehicle only.

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
$2 per adult, children 16 and under admitted free. $15 annual family pass available. Golden Eagle, Golden Age and Golden Access Passes are all honored.

FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
The main park unit contains the reconstructed Fort Necessity, the Visitor Center, the historic Mount Washington Tavern, a picnic area, and hiking trails. In winter cross-country skiing is available on the trails, although they are not mechanically tracked or groomed.

The Mount Washington Tavern was originally built as a stagecoach stop for travellers along the National Road (1828-1855).

The Braddock Grave Unit is approximately 1.5 miles west of Fort Necessity on US Route 40.

Jumonville Glen is approximately seven miles northwest of Fort Necessity. It is the site of Washington's first encounter with the French.

Programs/Activities:
Junior Ranger Program: Children ages 6 to 12 may earn a patch and certificate by completing activity work sheets about the park. Children under 6 can earn a plastic badge and paper ranger hat. The program is available all year. Allow at least two hours.

From mid-June through Labor Day, a variety of talks, tours, and demonstrations are available at the fort, visitor center, and Mount Washington Tavern. A complete schedule of daily activities is available at the visitor center.

Sales Outlet: Eastern National maintains a sales outlet in the visitor center which offers publications and items relating to the park's themes.

Lodging and camping facilities:
No public lodging or camping facilities are available in the park. Both lodging and camping are available nearby.

Food/supplies:
None available in the park, but are available nearby.

Accessibility:
The visitor center, fort reconstruction, picnic area, and the first floor of the Mount Washington Tavern are all handicapped accessible.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations for school groups or other educational groups are accepted by phone or mail throughout the year. Reservations should be made at least two weeks before the anticipated visit. All bona fide educational groups visiting the park for educational purposes are exempt from the park entrance fee. A fee waiver form will be mailed upon reservation.

BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
Allow one to two hours for your visit. The ten-minute slide presentation at the visitor center is a good introduction to the park story.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
A variety of special events and programs are held throughout the year.

Special educational programs are available for school groups.

Located along the National Road State Heritage Corridor in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
