Fort Moultrie
National Monument

Fort Moultrie's history covers 171 years of seacoast defense, including the first decisive victory in the American Revolution and firing onto Fort Sumter during the first battle of the Civil War. The third Fort Moultrie, built in 1809, stands today. By touring the fort, visitors can see how coastal defenses have evolved.

Highest in April and July; lowest in December and January. In 1998--91,000 visitors.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; closed Christmas.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING:
Summers hot and humid. Light clothing. Winters mild. Wear a light jacket.

DIRECTIONS:
From Charleston take US-17, north, to Mt. Pleasant and turn right onto SC-703. At Sullivan's Island, turn right on Middle Street; the fort is 1.5 miles from that intersection.

TRANSPORTATION:
To Park: US I-26 and US I-526 lead to US-17, and US-17 leads to SC-703. Charleston has an international airport, bus and train stations.

In Park: none.

FEES, COSTS, RATES:
User fees are charged beginning September 22, 1997. Adults (16 and over) $2.00; Children (15 and under) $1.00; Seniors (62 and over) $1.00; Family pass $5.00; Annual pass $20.00. Donations accepted. For more information call (843) 883-3123.

FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
The Visitor Center at Fort Moultrie will close October 21, 1998 for approximately twelve months while roof repairs are made. During this time the staff will move its operation into a temporary visitor contact facility located in the visitor center parking lot.

Throughout the renovation both Fort Moultrie and the temporary visitor facility will be open daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The user fee for Fort Moultrie will continue for those visiting the fort and will be collected in the temporary visitor facility. The 20-minute orientation film and exhibits will not be available for visitor use. However, copies of the orientation film will be available for loan to groups planning to visit Fort Moultrie.

Trails, Roads:
Interpretive signs are posted throughout the fort. By using these signs and the park brochure, visitors guide themselves through the fort travelling back in time from World War II to the American Revolution.

Programs/Activities:
Ranger programs are given at various times. Call for more information (843) 883-3123.

Lodging and camping facilities:
None in park.

Food/supplies:
Not available at the fort. There are several convenience stores on Sullivan's Island.

Other Concessions/NPS-Managed Visitor Facilities and Opportunities:

Accessibility:
The visitor contact facility and the majority of the fort is accessible by wheelchair. A wheelchair is available at the visitor center.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Tour the fort using the self-guided brochure; attend special events when offered.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations needed for school groups and other educational groups. Special Use permits approved on individual basis by calling (843) 883-3123.

BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
Allow one hour to see the fort.
