Fort Davis
National Historic Site

A key post in West Texas, soldiers from Fort Davis assisted in opening the area to settlement and protected travelers and merchants along the San Antonio-El Paso Road from 1854 to 1891. Today the fort is regarded as the best preserved in the Southwest. The site, which contains 460 acres, was authorized on September 8, 1961 and established on July 4, 1963.

OPERATING HOURS, SEASONS:
Daily, summer: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; winter: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; closed: Christmas Day.

DIRECTIONS:
The site can be reached from I-10 on the north, and US 90 on the south, by TX 17 and 118 and from US 90 on the west, by TX 505, 166 and 17. The town of Marfa is 21 miles to the south.

TRANSPORTATION:
Access by State Highways 17-118 in personal vehicle, bicycle and tour bus. No public transportation.

FEES, COST, RATES:
Two dollars per person. Individuals 16 or under, educational groups and holders of Golden Eagle, Golden Age or Golden Access Passports enter free of charge.

FACILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Visitor Center/Exhibits:
The visitor center and museum are located in a restored enlisted mens' barracks.

Programs/Activities:
A sound representation of an 1875 dress retreat parade, and bugle calls can be heard over the parade ground at scheduled times. Five restored and refurnished (1880's) buildings are open on a self-guided basis. Interpreters, dressed in period costumes, are stationed at some of these buildings during the summer months.

A cooperative association bookstore is located in the visitor center.

Accessibility:
The visitor center/museum and several of the historic buildings are wheelchair accessible.

RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES/PARK USE:
Self-guided tours of buildings and ruins; hiking on designated nature trails; and picnicking at Cottonwoods picnic area.

RESERVATIONS/PERMITS:
Reservations for all group visits and researchers should be made at least two weeks prior to the visit. At least one month's notice and application for special use permits are required. Filming permits are arranged on an individual basis. Contact Superintendent at (915) 426-3224.

BASIC VISIT RECOMMENDATIONS:
Plan to stay at least two to three hours.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS:
Friends of Fort Davis Festival, the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend; special evening tours in the Fall; and various interpretive programs throughout the year. For up-to-date information call (915) 426-3224.

ADJACENT VISITOR ATTRACTIONS:
Davis Mountains State Park, adjacent to site; Chihuahuan/Desert Research Institute, four miles, open during the summer; and the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, 17 miles.
