Professional Resources

There are a number of important Web-based resources to assist professional educators and advisers in dealing with international education questions and problems. USNEI does not claim that this list is exhaustive, but it can serve as a start in a quest for useful assistance.

Search Engines

Do not fail to try a search engine! By following the syntax instructions, you should be able to conduct a Web search on any topical phrase or title. Go to Search This Site to access search engines from USNEI, or use your own Web navigator. And remember that most search engines have corresponding foreign language sites that enable you to access the entire Web in many different countries. Search engines will enable you to find many services and resources that are not linked to major public organizations, such as service firms, counseling services, travel guides, credential evaluators, consultants, and others.

The following organizations provide general information, can supply resources and guides, and can point you to many other locations. On all of these sites you will find assistance designed for professional advisers and educators.

Advising Quarterly is a professional journal sponsored by USIA and published in online as well as print versions.

American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) provides access to technical resources for admissions professionals and offers assistance to member individuals and institutions on a wide variety of issues including foreign credential equivalency.

College Board Online provides access to information and resources on many aspects of college planning and financial assistance, college searches, testing, and institutional information as well as the organization's own international activities.

European Association for International Education (EAIE) is the European counterpart of American organizations such as NAFSA and provides, on a site still under development, information and links to professional resources and experts located in Europe.

Institute of International Education (IIE) provides access to comprehensive information and resources on opportunities and financial assistance for studying abroad and coming to the United States to study, as well as statistics and information on the international flow of students from a U.S. perspective.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators provides services and resources for advisers and other professionals who deal with international students and Americans studying abroad; news and information about political and legal developments affecting educational mobility; and links to useful sites.

OSEAS Europe, the Web site of the European Regional Advising Coordinator for the U.S. Information Agency's Overseas Educational Advising Services (OSEAS), provides useful information and links.

Specialized Assistance

Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) provides policy information, contact information, and links pertaining to the organizations that accredit U.S. institutions and academic and professional programs of study.

Educational Testing Service (ETS) provides information on many of the widely used U.S. standardized tests that form part of the American postsecondary admissions process, including the SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, TOEFL, and others.

National Association of Credential Evaluation Services provides contact information for the members of the central association of organizations providing evaluations of foreign academic credentials and related services to institutions and individuals.

Office of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education provides comprehensive information and links on all aspects of U.S. government financial assistance programs for American students, parents, and professional educators.
