The regulation of faculty positions at the postsecondary level in the United States is under the authority of the individual institution. Accreditation standards usually require that faculty appointments also meet the criteria set by the appropriate discipline or professional field in which the faculty member is to teach and/or conduct research.

Institutions post their own job announcements. To find out what positions may be available, you may consult:

• The Home Pages of individual institutions (go to Postsecondary Institution Directories);

• The Web sites of specific academic disciplines or professional associations (go to Information Sources for Fields of Study); or

• Announcements posted in the Chronicle of Higher Education (go to Information Sources: News Media). There may be a fee for this latter service.

In some cases the institution will state whether the position is open to foreign applicants.

Locating a position does not guarantee that you can come to the United States and take it; you must still follow all of the legal steps for obtaining a visa and permission to work.
