Local Level Organization
Local governments in the United States are chiefly responsible for the daily operation management, funding, and much of the policymaking (from curricula to labor relations) pertaining to public preschool, primary, and secondary education. Some local governments operate postsecondary institutions as well, and most provide adult educational opportunities. All types of local educational activity tend to receive state funding and limited federal funding, and also receive private donations and contributions.
States are divided locally into territorial entities called counties and into incorporated municipalities that are self-governing. In addition, there are established local school districts whose boundaries generally fall within the territories of relevant counties and municipalities. For detailed information, go to:
