Primary and Secondary SchoolsTypes of SchoolsPublic schools Regular public schools are organized and structured according to the policies and regulations of the local school district and state in which they operate. Local districts and states also govern what special schools, such as those for persons with disabilities, gifted and talented students, and adult learners may exist. Private Schools Private schools may be either religious or secular and they follow a wide variety of curricular and pedagogical approaches. There are also private schools that specialize in serving special needs students. Links to Schools Not every primary and secondary school operates a Web site, but many of those that do may be reached through online directories. All Types of Schools American Schools Directory (ASD) provides a comprehensive searchable database of links to public and private schools of different types and levels. Web 66 provides links to schools participating in Web 66, a national effort to link schools to each other through the Internet. Public Schools In addition to ASD and Web 66, K-12 Schools on the Web is a directory of public school links around the United States maintained by the Texas Education Agency. Private Schools Check Accreditation and Quality Assurance for links to associations that accredit private schools, as well as State Level Organization for information on state education agencies that may regulate private schools. Private school links may also be found via the Internet search engines. American Montessori Society (AMS) describes Montessori education and provides links to Montessori schools across the United States. Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) provides links to member schools. National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) provides links to member schools of all types and levels. National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) provides links or contact information for all U.S. schools operated by Roman Catholic dioceses or religious orders. Peterson's Independent Schools Guide provides a searchable online database of private schools sorted by characteristics. Waldorf Education describes Waldorf education and provides links to Waldorf schools across the United States. |
