General Information

Info-USA is the official information site of the State Department's Bureau of International Information Programs. Well-organized topically with good links.

Some useful national sources of information about the United States, including aspects of our history, politics, and society that relate to education, include:

Library of Congress, the official U.S. national library and one of the world's largest reference information resources;

National Archives and Records Administration, the official U.S. archival records depository, containing all of the historical records of the U.S. government; and

The Great American Web Site, a privately maintained general information Web site providing information on travel, current events, geography, and customs, plus links to other sources.

Educational News Media

U.S. Education Journal is an online newsletter intended for international students interested in U.S. education.

Education Week provides comprehensive coverage of events and issues in U.S. education at the primary and secondary levels.

Academe Online: The Chronicle of Higher Education provides similar news coverage for U.S. postsecondary education.

Education Reference Services

The National Library of Education (NLE) is the central federal library for education information and maintains the world's largest database on education in the English language. NLE manages several information services including USNEI and is responsible for distributing all U.S. Department of Education publications.

ACCESS ERIC is the central access site for the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), the National Library of Education's electronic database and network of specialized information Clearinghouses. ERIC provides a comprehensive array of user services and research tools on all aspects of education.

EduFind.com is a comprehensive privately maintained reference source designed to serve American educators, students, and parents with practical information and links.

Web Directories

American Schools Directory "Ed Connections" is a comprehensive directory of linked educational resources arranged by topic, with particular emphasis on sites of interest to education reformers and those involved in primary and secondary education.

Education Resources Online Directory (EROD) is the U.S. Department of Education's searchable list of links to education resources outside the agency and the federal government.

Information Searches

Ask ERIC is a unique online question-and-answer service provided by the Clearinghouses of the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) on behalf of the National Library of Education. Ask ERIC specializes in general reference and research information about education and guarantees a response within 48 hours.

Education Policy Information

An Educator's Guide to Schoolwide Reform provides links to major organizations involved in school reform and their policy pages and documents.

Education Policy Archives is a comprehensive resource for information on the historical development of U.S. education policy in modern times.

The Electronic Policy Network is a resource for the education policy agenda of activist organizations and leaders from a politically liberal perspective.

Policy.Com is a similar resource for the education policy agenda of activist organizations and leaders from a politically conservative perspective.

Educational Research Organizations

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is the largest research membership organization in the United States. Its members study all aspects and levels of education, and there are links to various special fields from the main Web site.

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) is the U.S. professional association serving institutional research specialists in academic institutions and other researchers and statisticians who study and conduct applied analyses of topics such as enrollment, finance, institutional planning, assessment and evaluation (institutional, student, and faculty), and inter-institutional comparisons.

The Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) is the U.S. professional association serving academic researchers interested in the theory and practice of education at the postsecondary level using a variety of disciplinary approaches.

The National Education Research and Development Centers are specialized education research centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and located at research universities. Each of them conducts a number of studies and investigations, and related activities, within assigned research areas.

The Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) is the principal office of the U.S. Department of Education responsible for federal research and dissemination activities in education.
